- HENRY THE SIXTH PART 3
-
- Act 4 Scene 10
-
- (Enter King Henry and the Duke of Exeter)
- l1l King Henry Here at the palace will I rest a while.
- l2l Cousin of Exeter, what thinks your lordship?
- l3l Methinks the power that Edward hath in field
- l4l Should not be able to encounter mine.
- l5l Exeter The doubt is that he will seduce the rest.
- l6l King Henry ThatÆs not my fear. My meed hath got me fame.
- l7l I have not stopped mine ears to their demands,
- l8l Nor posted off their suits with slow delays.
- l9l My pity hath been balm to heal their wounds,
- l10l My mildness hath allayed their swelling griefs,
- l11l My mercy dried their water-flowing tears.
- l12l I have not been desirous of their wealth,
- l13l Nor much oppressed them with great subsidies,
- l14l Nor forward of revenge, though they much erred.
- l15l Then why should they love Edward more than me?
- l16l No, Exeter, these graces challenge grace;
- l17l And when the lion fawns upon the lamb,
- l18l The lamb will never cease to follow him.
- (Shout within `A Lancaster", `A York")
- l19l Exeter Hark, hark, my lordùwhat shouts are these?
- (Enter King Edward and Richard Duke of Gloucester,
- with soldiers)
- l20l King Edward Seize on the shame-faced Henryùbear him hence,
- l21l And once again proclaim us King of England.
- l22l You are the fount that makes small brooks to flow.
- l23l Now stops thy springùmy sea shall suck them dry,
- l24l And swell so much the higher by their ebb.
- l25l Hence with him to the Towerùlet him not speak.
- (Exeunt some with King Henry and Exeter)
- l26l And lords, towards Coventry bend we our course,
- l27l Where peremptory Warwick now remains.
- l28l The sun shines hot, and, if we use delay,
- l29l Cold biting winter mars our hoped-for hay.
- l30l Richard Of Gloucester Away betimes, before his forces join,
- l31l And take the great-grown traitor unawares.
- l32l Brave warriors, march amain towards Coventry.
- (Exeunt)
